Last May 10, 2021 via Zoom, the LEAP Apprenticeship Program came to a close with its last event, a discernment talk about student leadership. While the LEAP apprentices have spent the last year working hard, learning about the ins and outs of BOx, and training in project management, VP for Training and Development Larry Acuña emphasized the importance of discernment in the choice to become a student leader.
At present, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB) states that the Philippines remains as “a consumer, source, and transit point for illegal wildlife trade,” wherein its market value, ecological value, poaching damages, and tourism revenue loss amount to approximately Php 50 billion per year.
Aiming to develop skills beyond the biological sciences, Out of the BOx is an annual workshop that tackles members’ other interests and hones abilities that can be utilized for the service of society. Focusing in sustainable cooking and fashion, Ateneo BOx tapped on The Sustainable Diner Project Manager, Melody Melo-Rijk, and Relevé Fashion founder and CEO, Raia Gomez to lead the discussion.
The highlight event in BYOPO was a Pet Competition that consisted of four different categories namely Most Meme-able Pet, Most Exotic Pet, Most AWW-dorable Pet, and Best in Dog Showcase. During a preliminary round, Facebook netizens were given the chance to select the top three Most Meme-able, Most Exotic, and Most AWW-dorable Pets that moved on to the live online event held via zoom last April 17.
Powering through the pandemic, this year’s Philippine Biology Olympiad (PBO) reached its conclusion last Saturday, March 20, with its top four finalists.

The promising future of Philippine biodiversity is achievable through the undying dedication of local scientists in the country; yet, it is guaranteed for the scientific community to be successful if ordinary citizens would conscientiously partake in the necessary actions that will invigorate safekeeping of wildlife.
